The New York State Movers & Warehousemen's Association is a not-for-profit association which was created in 1927 years ago to provide educational and other support services for the Household Goods Moving & Storage Industry in New York State and to provide consumers with the highest quality, reputable service at reasonable cost. The Association's membership represents all areas of the State.

The activities of the Association are managed by a Board of Directors which serves on a voluntary basis. Officers and Directors are elected by the Association's General Membership at its Annual Meeting. Directors are owners of moving and storage companies and also represent every area of New York State.

The day-to-day affairs of the Association are managed by
Mark A. Motler, the Executive Director. Governmental affairs are handled by Donald Mazzullo, Richard Scanlan and Amy Kellogg of Harter, Secrest and Emery.


The Board of Directors meets several times a year to review current issues which may have an impact upon the Industry and consumers. At these meetings they lay out plans for the ensuing months' strategy.

Who are we and what do we do.

The New York State Movers and Warehousemen Association ranks as one of the nations oldest and most prestigious associations serving the moving and storage industry. It is not relying upon its longevity for success but instead maintains a pro-active, progressive and forward-looking policy--making it one of the industries most effective advocates.

A dynamic Board of Officers and Directors representing all regions of New York State and all segments of the moving and storage industry meet on a regular basis to further our associations goal. This goal is the advancement and bettering of the moving and storage industry in New York State for all members and their customers.

Our board of directors is made up of representatives from the Western, Northern, Hudson Valley, Capital, Southern Tier, North Central and Central, and Metropolitan regions. The Long Island Moving and Storage Association is also represented on our state board.

The State association has developed specific committees to tackle problems that effect our industry throughout the state and to develop ways and means for the association to continue serving its members. All committees are chaired by volunteers who work hard to insure the association and it members best interests are looked after. These committees are;
    Executive Committee
  • Responsible for the management and affairs of the Association

    Nominating Committee
  • Provides a list of nominations to fill the positions of officers and board members for future elections

    Finance and MOVEPAC Committee
  • Reviews the associations business plan and budget for approval by the board of directors.
  • Reviews annual audit
  • Assesses the associations needs and develops a program to achieve these goals.

    Movers News and Special Projects Committee
  • Developing and monitoring the publication of the Movers News and the Association's web site.

    Constitution, By-Laws & Organization Committee
  • Proposes changes to existing by-laws that are beneficial to the overall structure of the organization.

    Grievance Assistance Program
  • Develops a streamlined, efficient procedure of dealing with complaints that are received by the association prior to being submitted to the Department of Transportation.

    Legislation & Regulatory Committee
  • Monitors all current regulatory and legislative issues that could impact the moving and storage industry in New York State.
  • Uses our lobbyists in Albany to monitor the halls of the State Government.

    Convention Committee
  • Responsible for developing the annual convention and trade show to include special themes, speakers and programs.

    Membership Committee
  • Develops and manages a strategic campaign for attracting and holding members.
  • Reviews all applications for membership to insure all application criteria are meet.

    Marketing & Public Relations Committee
  • Responsible for developing and implementing a public relations
  • Program that improves the image of movers in New York State.
The State Association also has a very active professional staff lead by our Executive Director, David Blake. David handles all the day to day operations of the association and works directly for the President and officers of the association.

The association has a full time Governmental Affairs firm, Harter, Secrest & Emery, who are our "Eyes and Ears" in Albany.

The association also has legal counsel available when required.

Rounding out our professional staff is an accounting firm which handles our year round accounting functions.

What are some of the things the association does that affects the success of movers in this state?

Publication of the Movers News. One the best run state association publications in the United States.
  1. Hosting of Educational seminars for movers such as; Certified Claims Seminars, Department of Transportation Compliance Seminars and our annual state convention that hosts speakers who provide information on topics of interest in our industry.

  2. Host of the New York State Movers and Warehousemen's Association Web Site. This informational web site can be used by the consumer to find a certified mover in New York State. Information areas on the web site provide consumer education and information to assist the shipper with the selection of their mover.

  3. Lower worker compensation insurance rates when members use the New York State Movers and Warehousemen's Safety Group #251 program with The Lovell Safety Management Co.

Conventions and Trade Shows:

Our format for all conventions consist of general business sessions on Friday and Saturday mornings. Afternoons are devoted to fun, recreational activities for the whole family. Saturday evening dinners with special guest speakers. Each year a special program is designed to benefit all that attend. Our trade show consists of representatives from venders who service our industry in New York. Each convention is packed with fun activities such as golf, tennis, dancing and many at your leisure programs and activities.

Maintains a high profile with the Department of Transportation. Department members are regular attendees at our state meetings.

The New York State Movers & Warehousemen's Association is the acknowledged leader and liaison of New York's Moving and Storage Industry. For over 80 years this association has been working hard for the benefit of moving companies and the consumers.
