NYSM&WA’s government affairs counsel, Harter Secrest & Emery, advocates for the introduction of bills, tracks the progress of proposed legislation and regulations, and lobby to secure or modify legislation and administrative action on behalf of the Association.  Here is an example of some of our efforts:

• Drafted legislation to deal with the issue of illegal movers in NYS.  The bill has passed and is waiting for the Governor to sign
• Previously passed legislation to eliminate the non-CDL class C license for the industry, allowing class D license holders to operate commercial vehicles with a gvw up to 25,999 lbs
• Stopped legislation that would have imposed various fees and charges on the moving industry directly
• Worked with the NYS Department of Tax and Finance to develop sales tax bulletins for the industry to clarify the sales tax status of various industry practices
• Enacted the Warehousemen’s Lien Law, which makes the warehousemen’s lien superior to all others in NYS
